The NEASECS logo is a representation of the seven bridges of Konigsburg shaped into a letter N for Northeast. Konigsburg, the city in which Emmanuel Kant spent his entire life, is also associated with one of the most famous problems of mathematics. Mathematicians sought to devise a route around the city which would cross each of the seven bridges spanning the River Pregel only once. In 1736, Leonhard Euler, one of the greatest mathematicians of all time, proved mathematically that such a route was impossible. His solution formulated several of the basic concepts of graph theory, and mathematicians (but not pedestrians) still refer to the Eulerian path. The drawing is based upon a late seventeenth-century map of the city, and the logo reminds us of the great achievements of the Enlightenment.
